Aspen Initiative for Europe, Aspen Institute España and Aspen Institut France jointly organized The Aspen Initiative for Europe Seminar ”Europe, The Next Generation, Shared Values”, which is based on the format of the long-running and widely-acclaimed cornerstone program of The Aspen Institute in the United States, took place in Ronda, Málaga, on September, 20-23.
This Seminar has reunited 24 emergent leaders from 16 different countries, mainly from European countries including Russia, United States of America, Rumania, Bosnia, and Herzegovina, Italy, France, Syrian Arab Republic, Czech Republic, Spain, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Hungary, Portugal, Germany, Georgia, and the Slovak Republic) with the aim of debating how new generations can current European challenges.
Aspen Initiative for Europe, Aspen Institute España, and Aspen Institute France have organized a new edition of Aspen Seminar for Young European Leaders. The seminar has been celebrated in Ronda, Málaga, on September, 20-23.
This seminar, whose title has been “Europe: The Next Generation, Shared Values, Future Prosperity”, has met 24 young emerging leaders coming from different European countries aimed at debating how the new leader generations are able to deal with the contemporary European challenges.
As with the previous edition, the seminar has been moderated by Leigh Hafrey, Senior lecturer in the Behavioral and Policy Sciences at MIT and Miguel Herrero, Professor of Classical Languages, Complutense University of Madrid.
The seminar, moderated by the Socratic method used in other Aspen programs, does not aim to reach conclusions or agreements but to improve the quality of our questions and raise the debates’ level on the major contemporary challenges and the leading timeless affairs regarding human values.
MODERATORS
LEIGH HAFREY
Senior lecturer in the Behavioral and Policy Sciences at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management. His 2005 book The Story of Success delves into how people use stories to articulate ethical norms. Since the mid-1990s, Hafrey has moderated numerous seminars for the Aspen Institute and its international affiliates.
He has taught courses in communication at the Harvard Business School, Arthur D. Little’s Management Education Institute, and at MIT. Since 1992, Hafrey has also worked in professional ethics, with a focus on ethics and management, teaching courses, and consulting with professional groups in medicine, architecture, law, and business, in the US and abroad. Hafrey has published book translations from French and German and has contributed to numerous publications. He is a former staff editor of The New York Times Book Review.
MIGUEL HERRERO DE JÁUREGUI
Professor, Universidad Complutense de Madrid. (Madrid, 1978) Miguel is BA in Classics and Law (Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 2001), Ph.D. in Classics (Universidad Complutense, 2005), and Ph.D. History of Religions (University of Bologna, Real Colegio de España, 2008). He has also researched in Max Planck Institut für Europäische Rechtsgeschichte, and in the Universities of Harvard, Oxford (Christ Church) and Zurich.
He is author of Orphism and Christianity in Late Antiquity (2010), editor of the collective volumes Tracing Orpheus (2011) and Redefining Dionysus (2013) and of several journal articles on ancient Greek religion, mythology, poetry, and philosophy. Other fields of his research are ancient Christian apologetic literature, especially Clement of Alexandria, and the reception of Aristotle’s Politics in early modern Europe. He teaches ancient Greek language and literature at Universidad Complutense de Madrid and also lectures on humanities at IE University. Besides his academic activity, from 2012 he collaborates as technical advisor for Education in the Madrid Regional Government

This seminar starts where traditional leadership programs leave off, engaging emerging leaders, mainly from European countries. Through the readings provided in advance, participants also learn from the greatest thinkers and leaders of all time. With these texts as a springboard, our discussions will address topical issues, explore common values and timeless questions, and ultimately examine how a young generation should engage with European ideals today.
The event will be organized next September 20-23, 2018, in Ronda (Spain). It will be held in English only and you will find here attached the agenda.
