Debate “Energy Transition, Geopolitics, and the Transatlantic Relationship”
Aspen Institute España will host, in collaboration with Fundación Consejo España – EEUU, an Aspen Ideas session next Thursday, November 30th at 4 pm on “Energy Transition, Geopolitics, and the Transatlantic Relationship”. The debate will bring together a group of Aspen Institute Spain alumni and participants of the Young American Leaders program of the Spain-USA Council Foundation with an outstanding professional career, interest in Spain and the potential to update their image of Spain, with a view to transferring it to their spheres of influence. Following the Aspen method, the conversation will revolve around a selection of texts and will be guided by expert moderators who will involve and encourage the exchange of perspectives among the participants. The session was introduced by Juan Moscoso del Prado, Senior Fellow at the Centre for Global Economy and Geopolitics (EsadeGeo) and Aspen Spain Fellow. The debate will be moderated by José M. de Areilza, Secretary General of Aspen Institute España.
Juan Moscoso del Prado
Juan Moscoso del Prado Hernández (Pamplona, 1966), is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Global Economy and Geopolitics (EsadeGeo). PhD in Economic and Business Sciences from the Autonomous University of Madrid (also graduated from the UAM, Economic Theory branch). Previously, Master in Economics from the College of Europe in Bruges (Belgium) and Diploma in Economics from the University of Kent (United Kingdom). Professionally, he has 30 years of experience in International Economic Relations, Economic Analysis and Studies, Finance, Business Administration, Diplomacy, European Affairs and Institutional Relations, both in the public and private sectors (member of the Spanish Parliament -Congreso de los Diputados-, Economic and Social Council of Spain (CES), Analistas Financieros Internacionales Analysts (AFI), University of Deusto -Deusto Business School-, Carlos III University, Banco Español de Crédito (BANESTO); as board member, private consultant on strategic matters and as an economist for different companies; as expert for the European Commission, the International Labor Organization (ILO), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)); as well as in different educational and civil society institutions (Foundations). Juan has been a Member of Parliament (MP) -Congreso de los Diputados in Spain- between 2004 and 2016. As MP he was Spokesman of the Economy and Competitiveness Committee, of the European Union Committee and Chairman of the Spanish Delegation to the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly, and all that time a prominent member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Spanish member of the Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU). He has been a shadow minister in the National Direction of PSOE. Lecturer, speaker, panellist, professor, in all kind of forum (universities, graduate schools, think-tanks, foundations), participant in 200 conferences and seminars in 70 countries. Juan has published 350 articles about politics, economy and international relations in media and specialised magazines, and also two books. He is also member of the Board of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), fellow of the Aspen Institute Spain and of the German Marshall Fund, and trustee and board member of several relevant Foundations and Think Tanks, he studied high school in Pamplona (Spain) and at the United States. He was member of the Fundación-Consejo España-EEUU for more than 10 years. Juan speaks fluent French and English.
José M. de Areilza
José M. de Areilza is the Secretary General of Aspen Institute España. He is also a Professor at ESADE Business School and the holder of the Jean Monnet Chair at ESADE. He has been a Visiting Professor at INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France, and London Business School and recently has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of Política Exterior, a leading publication of international relations in Spanish. His areas of teaching and research are European Union Law and Politics and Power and Influence in Organizations. In 2014 he published the book “Law and Power in the EU” and lately he has co-authored two cases on Angela Merkel at INSEAD Publishing. He has worked as Advisor to the Spanish Prime Minister on European and North American affairs. He is a Trustee of the Spanish Naval Museum and a Member of the European Council on Foreign Relations. Since 2009, he writes a weekly column on international affairs in ABC, a national newspaper and is the editor of a blog on wine in the Iberian peninsula entitled “Iberians on wine”. Areilza received an LL.B. degree with Special Graduation Prize from Universidad Complutense de Madrid and holds a Masters degree (LL.M.) and Doctorate degree (S.J.D.) from Harvard University and an M.A. from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He is a Member of the New York Bar.

Over the last few years, Aspen Institute España and Fundación Consejo de España – USA have jointly organized several discussion sessions and conferences on current issues on the transatlantic relationship and its future, focusing on economics, politics, sustainability, culture, education, energy or technology, among others. These sessions bring together young leaders from both sides of the Atlantic from various sectors of civil society, including business entrepreneurs, people from the public sector, academics and journalists.
