Dialogue: “Geopolitics for a New Age”

December 19th, 7.00pm – Casa América

On December 19th at 7:00pm, we will host a conference and discussion titled “Geopolitics for a New Age” with Sir Robin Niblett, former Director of Chatham House and author of The New Cold War: How the Dispute Between the United States and China Will Shape Our Century (RBA, 2024), Cristina Gallach, former Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and former Special Commissioner for the Alliance for the New Economy of Language, and Charles Powell, Director of the Real Instituto Elcano. The event, jointly organized by the Real Instituto Elcano, Casa de América, and Aspen Institute España, will be moderated by José M. de Areilza, Secretary General of Aspen Institute España and Editor-in-Chief of Política Exterior magazine.

We find ourselves immersed in a new era of great rivalries, a world divided into two antagonistic blocs: the Western bloc and the one led by the China-Russia alliance, in what could be considered a new Cold War. However, this time, emerging powers practice triangulation strategies between these two blocs with fewer dependencies and hierarchies, which will ultimately define the future of the Global South.

This new Cold War is vastly different from the one that pitted the Soviet Union against the West in the second half of the 20th century. Today, we inhabit a more volatile and dangerous world, witnessing the rise of China, the strategic retreat of the United States, the rise of new threats such as cyber warfare and the climate crisis, as well as the persistence of traditional risks: nuclear proliferation, international terrorism, mass migrations, among others.
