What is Aspen Institute España for you?
Aspen España Fellows Program

Aspen Institute España selects each year from its network of Alumni those who have excelled during their participation at the seminars to become candidates for the Aspen España Fellows Program.

The Aspen Institute Alumni Network is an engaged community of people actively participating in our educational and policy studies events, providing important input for our activities, and helping sustain our mission to foster leadership based on enduring values and to provide a nonpartisan venue for dealing with critical issues.

The creation of the Aspen Institute España Fellows Program joins the network of committed Aspen alumni with the mission of Aspen in Spain and offers its members the opportunity to join the international Network of Aspen. Aspen Fellows may be trained to become moderators of Aspen seminars and have access to other programs and seminars of The Aspen Institute. Thus, their role as representatives and ambassadors of Aspen España is encouraged.

While the enlightened institutions that took us centuries to build tumble, to me, Aspen España has become the main space not only for humanistic and rational dialogue, but even for civic and democratic proselytism. A space that has also the vocation of channel and today, once again essential, of bridge. In Aspen España we reflect together; people who will never vote the same exchange texts and ideas, recommend books, learn, introduce ourselves by telling what animal we would like to be, a kingfisher, for example, and we also love each other. Everyone does it in their own way, we share a philosophy and goals, to improve our world from knowledge, science, technology, culture, and we do it in the style of the old Socratics of ancient Greece or Rome to whom everything we owe.

Being an Aspen España Fellows is a gift for life. Aspen Institute España provides a fundamental space for listening and reflection. An enriching learning space, with ideas from very diverse experiences. Joint reflection can be compared to a play that, played by musicians who listen to each other, take the score far beyond what the composer imagined when writing it.

Aspen España is a unique experience of pause, perspective, humility, enrichment and self-knowledge. It is pause, because it allows you to stop. An intellectual oasis in the middle of such a hectic and intense pace of life. It is perspective, because it inspires you with new looks from new angles that you have never considered before. It is humility, because you always discover people with reflections far superior to yours, but with enormous generosity. It is enrichment, because you always come out with better questions, with more clarity about the options that life offers. It is self-knowledge, because by listening to others you learn to question yourself better. That is Aspen España. A gift for the mind and soul.

What Aspen España is to me: Aspen España is the perfect organization to learn. The variety of ideas and points of views that are risen in every interaction (I am not only refering to the seminars or courses, but, simply, to the conversation that arise among Fellows or other Aspen España members) is astonishing. Aspen España has been fundamental to broaden my intelectual but also human horizons. Obviously, reflection on the great concerns of our time is central, but Aspen España's approach goes far beyond the mere analysis of today.

Aspen España Fellow - January, 2021
Aspen España is for me an impulse to reconnect with my own curiosity when it is diluted between tasks and urgencies. In a world that requires us to give quick answers, and where dogmatism seems to be the only way to face the feeling of risk and navigate complexity, Aspen España offers forums where you can explore questions that do not have an easy solution and live (creatively) with uncertainty. For me, Aspen España meetings are always an opportunity to connect reflection with its ultimate and most important goal: an action that is meaningful and that aspires to generate some kind of good.

Aspen Institute España is a place where one develops greater confidence and desire to have a positive impact on society and thus contribute to the construction of the common good. Its activities, which allow listening, talking and learning about leadership based on values, offer the opportunity to develop and obtain the necessary tools to face, both professionally and personally, the challenges and tensions of an open society. Aspen España, where I have had the privilege of working, has offered me a unique opportunity to enrich myself intellectually, decipher the changes that occur in my environment and the world, and learn to raise better questions.

In a world where deep reflection, dialogue and consensus are more important than ever, Aspen programs offer a unique space for the development of ideas and debate. As we have seen over the past few years, forums that facilitate learning, understanding and constructive disagreement are essential to encourage vital debates in the public sphere and reinforce one key insight to me: our rights and duties emanate from our status as citizens and not for belonging to a certain group. The Aspen model is undoubtedly the best antidote to the pernicious effects of echo chambers to which we are often attracted. Aspen thus offers a unique opportunity to generate valuable and impactful ideas on our society.

Aspen España Fellow - October, 2017
Participating in the seminars of Aspen Institute España was for me a formidable and transformative experience. Aspen España offers a meeting point for people from different professions and national origins. And all of them are there to discuss and reflect without sectarianism, with an unusual deep understanding about the issues of the world we live in.
Crista Ruiz de Arana
Doctor in Psychology and Clinical Psychologist
Aspen España Fellow - March, 2016
Aspen España means to me a meeting place and an opportunity to reflect. It helps me deepen on essential issues of the human being, enrich myself in dialogue with others, meet valuable authors and new viewpoints. The different activities of Aspen España contribute to improve my personal and professional life; it helps me keep my curiosity alive, develop an “inner self” which allows me to review my priorities, it stimulates me in my clinical practice and in the way I teach. Whenever I can, I attend to the activities of Aspen España, because I return renewed and recharged with enthusiasm to contribute to the common good and be a better person. I really value the friendships I have made there and the training as a moderator.
