Global Politics Seminar 2019: “Post-globalization, identities, and politics”
Aspen Institute España inaugurated the fifth edition of the Global Politics Program with a seminar on “Post-globalization, Identities, and Politics” on the 29th and 30th of November in La Granja, Segovia.
The purpose of the program is to create a space in which individuals with political vocation, dedicated to public service, and who have shown leadership potential can reflect and debate on important political, economic, and social questions. The program is structured into a seminar and four sessions held throughout the year.
In this edition, 28 young political leaders from seven parties got together for two days of debate following the Aspen Method, based on a selection of readings from classic and contemporary authors such as Stefan Zweig, Hannah Arendt, Rachel Botsman, José Ortega y Gasset, Angela Merkel, and Michael Ignatieff.
The seminar was moderated by two Aspen España Fellows: Juan Moscoso del Prado, a former member of Congress for PSOE and Chief of the Department for International Relations and Exterior Affairs at the Social and Economic Advisory Council, and Miguel Herrero de Jáuregui, Professor of Classical Philology at the University Complutense in Madrid. The seminar also included a colloquial with Soledad Becerril, former People’s defender for Spain from 2012 to 2017.
In its mission to create spaces for dialogue and to strengthen democratic values, Aspen Institute España encourages each participant to reflect on topics ranging from geopolitics, ethical leadership, and the global economy. It is a space that helps build personal relationships that go beyond political affiliations, critical for finding common ground between parties, and creating innovative solutions to the country ́s problems.
Over the past years, some of Spain’s most important political leaders have passed through the program, and forty reputable speakers have participated in the sessions, including Javier Solana, President of the Aspen Institute; Hugo Dixon, journalist, entrepreneur, President of InFacts and founding member of the People´s Vote campaign; Robin Wright, journalist, and analyst covering international politics; Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of SEGIB; Pablo García-Berdoy, the former Spanish ambassador to Germany and current permanent Spanish representative at European institutions; Robin Niblett, Director of Chatham House; Oscar Fanjul, Vice-President of Omega Capita and member of the board of trustees at Aspen Institute España.
